the Organising Committee of the

20th International Amateur Theatre Festival of Kazincbarcika,
in the memory of István Horváth Jr.,

cordially invites foreign participants to its biannual festival to be held,
from Wednesday, June 30th to Sunday, 4th of July 2010
“We believe that theatre is alive and is eternal.”

Our festival is traditionally a competitive meeting of youth and adult amateur theatre of high artistic quality, of experimental attitude and strong audience appeal. All kinds of performance styles (comedy, dance, physical etc.) are welcome if they meet these requirements.

Each performance is discussed and evaluated by the jury in an open professional debate with all festival participants. The jury is composition of the most prestigious Hungarian theatre professionals who are open to the amateur theatre world, with one member from another European country.

International observers are also welcome (festival directors, cultural exchange managers etc.)

The organisers can accommodate groups of maximum 15 persons with a performance no longer than 70 to 90 minutes. If the show is presented in a small space (with no more than 100 spectators) it might be performed twice during the festival.

The organisers will provide the participating groups with hostel, full board (three meals a day), and appropriate rehearsing time on stage with professional technical assistance, and free access to all the events during the whole festival (performances, workshops, concerts, club events etc.). The travel and transportation costs must be covered by the participants themselves. Groups arriving by air at Budapest international airport may ask for assistance to get to the town of Kazincbarcika (appr. 200 km from Budapest).

The festival hosts daily workshops by theatre artists of high reputation. Workshopping possibilities are open to foreign groups and artists, of course. In case the applicant group or its director, artistic leader is ready to conduct one or more workshops during the festival, they should indicate it on the application form.

Interested groups (or individual artists) can apply directly to the festival organising committee with supporting letter (recommendation) from their respective national centres of the International Amateur Theatre Association (aita/iata) no later than 15th February 2010. The application should contain a detailed introduction of the theatre, an introduction to the show, a video or DVD recording of the performance and the recommendation of the national centre concerned. All participants, domestic and foreign ones are selected by the Artistic Director of the festival considering all the above criteria. The official invitation letter based on the decision of Artistic Director and approved by the Committee will be mailed by the end of February 2010.
