Children & Youth

The Committee exists to ensure that issues relating to children and youth are central concerns for AITA/IATA.
The Committee was established in 1995 as a development from the former Drama in Education sub-committee.
The
World Congress elects the co-ordinator for Children and Youth. The current co-ordinator is Ms. Helle Hauger from Denmark (re-elected in Monaco in 2009 - retires 2013).

There are two official AITA/IATA events that are the active concern of the committee:

AITA/IATA World Festival of Children’s Theatre

The AITA/IATA World Festival of Children’s Theatre was first held in Lingen in 1991 and has been held there every two years since.
The festival is held in Lingen every four years and somewhere else in the world between every Lingen event.
In 2000, the event was held in Toyama Japan. In 2002, the event was held in Lingen, Germany. In 2004, the event was held in Havana, Cuba.

The event returned to Lingen in 2006 and the 10th World Festival of Children's Theatre "Children Play for Children" under the theme "Children are the Present Day of Earth" was held in Moscow, Russia in 2008.

The Standing Committee participates in an advisory and supportive role for the preparation of each festival.

The AITA/IATA World Festival of Children's Theatre has four elements:

  • Theatrical Performance by children of groups from many parts of the world
  • Workshops
  • Social Programme
  • Symposium for directors and other members of the public and visitors

AITA/IATA Drama in Education Congress

The AITA/AITA Drama in Education Congress was first held in Austria in 1974 and has been held every two years since that date. Up to the early 1990's it was probably the only truly regular international drama in education congress.

In 2005 the Congress celebrated its 30th birthday. The most recent AITA/AITA Drama in Education Congress was held in April 2009 in Austria.

Between April 3-9, IDEA President Dan Baron Cohen participated in the 17th IATA/AITA world congress on drama in education. A week of meetings between IDEA and IATA officers culminated in the signing of a historic Agreement, affirming the commitment by both organizations to exchange expertise, collaborate and work together through the World Alliance for Arts Education to build a new paradigm of education for the 21st century.
