aita/iata welcomes a new Associate – Singapore I-Lien Drama Society.

Below is a brief history of the Group and key events. More details, including more information about their productions are here.

Singapore I-Lien Drama Society is an amateur Chinese drama society formed in 1957 by a group of drama enthusiast to promote cultural and drama activities through experimenting with a wide spectrum of plays which include both master-pieces of foreign playwrights and local plays.

They have participated regularly in Drama Festivals and the group was invited twice to participate in the Drama Festival of Malaysia, presenting plays such as “Wait Until Dark”, “A piece of Rope”, “The Last Wedding” and “Encounters of a Part-Time TV Artiste”.

In 2007 and 2009, the group was invited to present the play “Princess Jasmine” during the aita/iata World Congress and International Festival held in South Korea and during the Third Shandong Mini Theatre Festival in China. The group even garnered an award of “Outstanding Play” during the latter festival.

In 2012, the group was invited to present the children musical play “Run! Little Rabbit Run! 2” during the World Festival of Children’s Performing Arts in Toyama, 2012, in Japan.

Besides presenting plays, the group has also organised theatre-related activities. In January 2011, the group organised “Cao Yu and Singapore Theatre: Talk cum Exhibition” in conjunction with the great Chinese playwright, Cao Yu’s 100th Anniversary. In the same month, the group co-organised the aita/iata Asian Regional Centre’s Asia Pacific Theatre Conference at The Arts House. A discussion on the situation of Asian theatre was held and the plans on the organisation of international festivals were presented.

Singapore I-Lien Drama Society has 37 members, the age range from mid- twenties to the eighties. They stage an average of two productions per year.
