My Dear Friends in Theatre,

I have just returned from Monaco, where the 31st Congress, General Assembly (GA) and Mondial du Théâtre were held to great accomplishment and appreciation. I know that our ever efficient Administrator, Anne Gilmour has posted a summary of events on our website and after the next meeting of the EB later this year she will post more information of the proceedings of the GA. Jacques Lemaire

Before concluding the work of its 31st World Congress, the General Assembly appointed the second French speaking honorary president of its history by adopting a proposal presented to the Council (see link below) by 198 votes to 2. The first French speaking Honorary President was Guy Brousse, a Monegasque citizen and founder of the World Festival of Amateur Theatre and Congress, whose smile always dazzled the Congress and Festivals held in Monaco every 4 years. Jacques Lemaire, a French citizen, a former World President of the aita / iata (1999-2003) and outgoing French speaking Secretary (2009-2013) is the new Honorary President.

Jacques wishes to pay tribute to his predecessor as follows: “I am very sensitive to the honor that is made to me and to the friendship shown to me by a lot of delegates, I would like to say here that this honor touches me especially since I succeed my friend Guy Brousse in this honorary position. He was primarily responsible for my involvement in international organisations more than twenty years ago. Allied, for the occasion, to Guy Villers, he was successful in convincing me to become involved for a few years in order to preserve the use of the French language. These few years have actually lasted more than 20 years … (22 exactly) and have enabled me to make many friends around the world. Of course I remain available to help elected officers and I look forward to being of service as long as my health will permit. I also wish to express my gratitude to the Studio de Monaco and to numerous volunteers who make possible the festive events every four years ”

The Council Resolution (page 38 of volume 2) with a brief résumé of Jacques Lemaire is HERE.

In Monaco, the organisers and the volunteers are, we hope, relaxing and looking back on a wonderful, successful and friendly event. It was a privilege to see amateur theatre of many different styles and of high standards from around the world and we know that the participants will take back many happy memories of their time at the Mondial du Théâtre 2013.
